The University of Washington School of Law will present Fair Use In The Digital Age: Understanding the Impact of Campbell v. Acuff-Rose‘s “Transformative Use Test” on April 17-18, 2015.
This two-day copyright conference will evaluate the impact of Campbell v. Acuff-Rose (the “Pretty Woman” case) on current law and controversies. While the Copyright Act gives a four-part test for determining fair use, as a result of Campbell’s reasoning, many courts and commentators focus almost exclusively on whether the allegedly infringing work is “transformative.” This conference will explore the implications and appropriate applications of this test in a world that is now primarily online, in which digital transformative use is ubiquitous.
