Civil Rights & Civil Justice: 50 Years Later – Minneapolis, MN

Law and Inequality: A Journal of Theory and Practice presents Civil Rights & Civil Justice: 50 Years Later on October 18, 2013.

This year’s symposium celebrates and critiques the legacy of two momentous events during 1963-64: Gideon v. Wainwright and the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Fifty years ago, as the Attorney General for the state of Minnesota, a young Walter Mondale (Â’56) spearheaded the drafting of an amicus brief signed by 21 attorneys general to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to ensure that legal access for all persons facing criminal charges regardless of ability to pay, be provided. His advocacy helped to change our nation’s criminal justice system.

This event scrutinizes the legacies of those landmark moments, critiquing our national progress across several important streams: gender advancements, racial equality, citizenship and immigration, and the expansion of rights for gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals and transgender individuals. Joining us is a terrific roster of faculty from across the country.
