Dear all,

The Guest editors of this special issue of Language and Law / Linguagem e Direito (LL / LD) invite original articles that fit the theme of the issue: “Violence against Women”. Over the years, violence against women has achieved greater visibility, awareness and manifestations of repudiation and censorship in society. However, it still remains a global pandemic. Worldwide, more than one out of every three women has experienced physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence and/or non-partner violence. Violence against women, and specifically gender-based violence which affects women disproportionately, can be addressed through a fundamental rights lens.

It is a “violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms”, according to Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women (1994), which also defines it as “any act or conduct based on gender that causes death, harm or physical, sexual or psychological suffering to women, both in the public and private spheres”. From a gender perspective, it is understood that the term “woman” or “women” as adopted here covers a wide range of female gender identities such as cisgender, transgender and LGBTQI+ and their intersections with other categories such as class, race, ethnicity and generation.

Violence against women covers a wide range of cruel practices such as domestic violence (moral, physical, sexual, psychological and property violence), sexual harassment, rape, genital mutilation, forced marriage, persecution, abortion or forced sterilization, feminicide, etc. All these forms of violence and especially those associated with domestic violence and feminicide, are within the ambit of this call, since the special issue is scheduled to be published in the second half of 2021, the 15th anniversary of the enactment of the ground-breaking ‘Maria da Penha Law’ – a piece of Brazilian legislation that aims to combat domestic and family violence against women.  It will also be more than 5 years since passing of the Brazilian Feminicide Law – a law that criminalizes feminicide, the gender-motivated killing of women. The naming of this phenomenon as a different crime from homicide is an attempt to combat the high rates of murder of women worldwide. This is particularly evident in Brazil, which is 5th in the ranking of countries that most kill women in the domestic and family context, and also worldwide, where six women are victims of femicide every hour, according to United Nations Organization (ONU).

Submissions should be previously unpublished and address, via a linguistic analysis, specific issues at the interdisciplinary intersection between the areas of Language and the Law, although they may include other related fields. Within the broad thematic axis that involves the social problem of violence against women, we welcome contributions related to linguistic and legal aspects within the following sub-themes: 1) the law; 2) interviews with social actors involved, directly or indirectly, in cases of violence (police, witnesses, defendants, journalists, delegates, judges, lawyers, etc.); 3) the legal process; 4) the judgment; 5) the treatment given by all the Media; 6) social media. We also invite reviews of recently published books within this thematic scope. If you wish to submit a book review, please inform the Guest editors in advance.

Manuscripts may be written in English or Portuguese, although they must contain an Abstract and Keywords in both languages. The rules for manuscript submission and formatting should follow the submission instructions and guidelines available from the journal’s website (https://ojs.letras.up.pt/index.php/LLLD/about/submissions#authorGuidelines). Articles that do not meet the guidelines for authors will not be considered.
