The IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, together with the Tilburg Sustainability Center will host an Urban Resilience Workshop: “Enhancing Urban Climate Resilience: The Role of Law” on September 10, 2020 at Tilburg Sustainability Center in Tilburg, Netherlands.
Cities are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Climate change affects almost every city in the world, and as a result, climate resilience has become an urgent matter in urban political agendas. Responsive and flexible adaptation policies are needed to make cities resilient. In order to develop and implement such policies, cities have to rely on an enabling legal framework. In some instances, specific adaptation law does not exist. Cities therefore have to rely on their existing legal instruments such as planning and building regulations, for instance. The question arises whether these existing instruments enable city authorities to adequately promote or enhance climate resilience in their areas of jurisdiction.
The workshop will provide interested participants from academia, practice or government the opportunity to critically question whether cities can rely on existing legal instruments such as planning and building regulations etc to achieve resilience, or whether a new regulatory framework is needed.
Everyone interested in climate resilience in cities is welcome to attend the event. The workshop is a free event, but registration is compulsory, as space is limited. Please note that refreshments and lunch will be provided. Accommodation and transportation arrangements and costs are, however, the responsibility of attendees.
Persons interested in this topic from a legal or regulatory (also from a multi-disciplinary) perspective are encouraged to submit an abstract. Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words and be submitted to Dr Angela van der Berg at A.vdrBerg@uvt.nl by March 2, 2020.
