CFP: A Jurisprudence of Complexity? Rethinking the Relationship between Law and Society—Lancaster, UK

Lancaster University Law School

The Lancaster University Law School will be hosting a conference, A Jurisprudence of Complexity? Rethinking the Relationship between Law and Society, on September 24-25, 2015. Lancaster University is currently accepting abstracts for proposal in any areas related to the subject of the conference. Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be sent to Dr Tom Webb (t.webb@lancaster.ac.uk), by 6pm on June 15, 2015, and must include the author’s name, affiliation, and full contact information. For more information, please see the conference website.

The conference will address the following foundational questions about Complexity Jurisprudence:

(1) How does complexity theory understand “Law”?
(2) How do complexity theorists understand the functioning of Law and how does this influence the idea of Law as a regulatory tool?
(3) What is the ‘value-added’ of an approach from complexity to the study of how law operates (in particular when contrasted with other postmodern and systems approaches).
(4) What does complexity tell us about the academic function of critique and the functioning of sub-discipline discourses (public law, environmental law, international law, etc.)?
